The NCAA has officially decided to do away with the spring transfer portal window. This decision has felt looming for a while, after the NCAA had already moved the spring window from 15 days to 10 this year. Now, they will officially eliminate the window and move to a single window, although the exact dates and timing of that window still need to be finalized.
As the NIL era has unfolded, the spring transfer window had become a hot-button issue around college football, with a lot of coaches complaining about feeling blindsided by players leaving unexpectedly, lured by big offers from other schools, without an opportunity for another window to open up again before the fall camp and the season kickoff to replace them. The counter to that would be that some coaches did find some benefit, for example, being able to part ways with a player who wasn’t working out before having to roster them for the season.
For what it’s worth, Michigan State added seven players during the spring window this year.
