The NCAA Administrative Committee has adopted new changes to the transfer portal and is expected to implement further updates in the coming months, which will also necessitate new adaptations for the Texas A&M Aggies on the recruiting trail.
According to Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger, the committee announced on Wednesday that the spring transfer portal window has been eliminated. The length and timing of the fall slot are still undecided, but will be voted upon and established within the next month. Along with the elimination of the spring window, the NCAA also adopted the move to make December a dead period for recruiting, which restricts coaches from having any in-person contact with recruits on and off campus.
The committee also pushed back the date when high school seniors can officially receive offers from August 1 to November 15. Below is the official statement from the NCAA regarding the updated and implemented rulings moving forward:
While these adaptations will not go into effect until it is voted on in the coming weeks, the recommendation from the NCAA is that student-athletes enter the transfer portal between January 2-11. This is an attempt to avoid college athletes, specifically those in the football realm, from transferring during postseason play with their respective programs.
Players leaving schools before the end of the season has been a noticeable issue among many college football fans and coaches heading into bowl seasons. Some cases have seen top-rated players immediately enter the winter window before their teams have even begun preparing for their postseason bowl bid.
The proposed dead period in December could also avoid any recruiting drama, while taking stress off the shoulders of head coaches across the country. This gives them ample time to focus on closing out the season before hitting the recruiting trail again in a month.
According to the NCAA’s press release, the contact prohibition has also been proposed for an extension. This means that instead of other schools not being able to contact a student-athlete after signing a written financial aid agreement, it will instead apply once they sign a written offer of settlement-related benefits.
Again, nothing is official until officially voted on, but the changes are in motion to be adopted as soon as the official meeting is held by October 1.
