The NCAA Administrative Committee on Wednesday officially eliminated the spring transfer portal window for Division I football, but has not yet decided on when it would begin or how long it would last.
The NCAA Football Oversight Committee earlier this month recommended a single 10-day window to run from Jan. 2-11. However, the Administrative Committee, citing “student-athlete feedback,” could lengthen the window and move it to later in January during its upcoming meeting next month.
Also, the Administrative Committee (formerly the Division I Council) has eliminated the fall transfer window’s “graduate student exception,” which allowed players who have already finished their degrees to enter the transfer portal at any time. Under the new rules, grad students would have to wait until the single January window to notify their schools of intention to enter the portal.
Coaches and others around the game have long been in favor of a single transfer portal window at the end of the regular season, allowing programs to essentially set their rosters prior to spring practice. Numerous well-known players hit the portal this past April, giving their former teams limited opportunities to recruit replacements.
