The Washington Commanders poured significant resources into their offensive line this offseason to better protect quarterback Jayden Daniels. Washington traded multiple draft picks for left tackle Laremy Tunsil. It used a first-round pick on right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Those moves allowed the Commanders to move Brandon Coleman back inside to guard, where he’s most comfortable.

Through two weeks, it’s been a mixed bag for Washington’s offensive line. The unit held up well in Week 1 against an excellent New York Giants’ front, but struggled in Week 2 against Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers. Some of those struggles can be explained away as Conerly, a rookie, is playing right tackle for the first time and learning on the job against some of the NFL’s best.

So, where does Washington’s offensive line rank compared to the 31 other NFL teams after two weeks?

Pro Football Network, using its Impact Grading System, ranked the Commanders’ offensive line No. 12 ahead of Week 3.

While the Commanders’ pass-blocking unit has started to show signs of promise, it appears that they’re still the primary reason holding back this offensive success rate. Washington’s unit averages 1.37 yards before contact per carry, the third-best rate in the league.

Despite its success on the ground, this unit has faced its fair share of pressures in all facets, mainly in Week 2 against the Packers. Is this unit more of the Week 1 showing they produced or Week 2? The former moves them up the list. The latter drops them yet again.

It’s worth noting that Washington is without right guard Sam Cosmi. Cosmi is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, but will return at some point.

Conerly’s Week 2 struggles led ex-Washington coach Jay Gruden to say he would consider sitting Conerly for a few weeks and letting veteran Andrew Wylie take over at right tackle. Gruden acknowledged that Conerly is an excellent prospect, but play strength remains a concern. It sounds like the Commanders are committed to allowing Conerly to play through this gauntlet of pass rushers to begin his career.
