Orchard Park, N.Y. (WHAM) — When the Bills drafted Maxwell Hairston in the first round of this year’s NFL draft, he made quite an impression — both that day and the day after — with his energy and enthusiasm.

A couple of weeks later, out on the field for rookie minicamp, that enthusiasm is still there.

“It was exciting,” he said. “Finally got out there, get some action, got to go against the offense — it was exciting. It was a lot.”

Hairston’s first job is to listen to the coaches and get better every day.

“It’s a different game now,” he said. “Just adjusting from the college terms to now my Buffalo Bills terms, and just going from writing it down to going out there and actually playing in coverages and all that stuff. Like I said, it’s an adjustment, but it’s something I’m very excited for. It’s something I know I can get better every practice at.”

The Bills drafted two other cornerbacks this year: fourth-round pick Jordan Hancock of Ohio State and sixth-round pick Dorian Strong of Virginia Tech.

Strong and Hairston got to know each other through the draft process.

“Me and Max, we trained together during this whole process, so we kind of already working together,” Strong said. “I know how he works. I know how to make him a better player, he knows how to make me a better player, so that’s what it’s all about.”

“Dorian Strong had a really good day today,” Hairston said after Friday’s camp session. “I’m taking mental reps when I watch D-Strong, and seeing him go out there and play with poise and play like he’s already adjusted, that was good to see. You know we’re gonna be on each other and help each other get through this process.”

Each one of these days is another step in the process for the rookies, and the next one is a big one.

In a couple of weeks, the veterans come to town, and that means you’re on the field with Josh Allen and company.
