How local tax dollars are paying for the new Nissan Stadium

  • September 19, 2025

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Titans leaders said major progress has been made on their new domed stadium. Crews are working to finish up the roof beam installation and pouring concrete slabs for the field to stay on schedule for an early 2027 opening.

The $2.2 billion new Nissan Stadium is being paid for with one of the largest commitments of taxpayer money for a sports stadium ever.

The Titans are responsible for $940 million plus any cost overruns. The rest of the project is being paid for with $500 million from the state and $760 million in bonds from the Metro Sports Authority.

When the deal was announced in October 2022, former Mayor John Cooper promised the stadium would be paid for by tourists and spending around the stadium, not by Nashville families. He said the deal was needed to make sure Metro was not on the hook for around $1.7 billion in renovations to the current stadium.

While local tax dollars won’t directly go to pay for the stadium, Nashvillians who want to attend an event or buy something in the area built near the stadium will help cover the costs.

Metro Council approved plans in April 2023 to repay the bonds with an additional 1% hotel occupancy tax, an in-stadium sales tax, a $3 per ticket fee and a levy for half of all sales tax collected around the stadium development.

This week, Washington D.C. passed funding for a $3.7 billion stadium project for the Commanders on the old RFK Stadium site. The plans call for an indoor stadium with around 65,000 seats, which is the same design being constructed in Nashville.

The Commanders agreed to contribute $2.7 billion while the city will invest around $1.1 billion for the stadium, housing, green space and other public resources in the area.

Both teams are hoping to attract major events, like a Super Bowl and Final Four. Titans leaders said they’re expecting to start announcing schedules as they get closer to opening.
