Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will return to New York this weekend with more on his mind than football. The Chiefs quarterback spoke this week on some of his earliest memories in the city, dating back to when his father, Pat Mahomes Sr., pitched for the New York Mets.“It’s some of my best memories. Just my dad being on the Mets and playing in those National League Championship Series versus the Braves or playing in the World Series versus the Yankees,” Mahomes said. “That’s when I can first start remembering stuff, and I don’t know what the rules are back then, but they just had me out on the field. I was taking groundballs with Derek Jeter and then shagging fly balls. It was super cool.”Mahomes, who turned 30 this week, said New York was where baseball first captured his attention as a kid. “Back at the time the Mets were my favorite team because my dad had the most success,” he said. The Yankees defeated the Mets in five games in the 2000 World Series, culminating a dynasty that won four titles in five years. Jeter, the Yankees shortstop during that run, wrote the entry after Mahomes was named to Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential List in 2020. “It’s not just that his combination of athleticism, creativity and vision is fun to watch,” Jeter said in the article. “What his play really showcases is his love of the game and the commitment he’s made to his teammates and coaches, and it’s clear that is the true foundation of his success.”Both the Chiefs and Giants are looking for their first wins of 2025.
