Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning is often cited as a guy who might be a starter on a few different teams around the NFL.

Some of that stems from Browning’s successful stint under Zac Taylor in place of Joe Burrow back in 2023. And ahead of Week 3 this season, Taylor has remained adamant that he won’t change the offense for his backup.

Hence, ESPN’s Seth Walder still ranking Browning as the second-best backup in the NFL and giving fans a little peek at what’s to come:

“Of course, Browning is not without red flags. His performance in 2023 came with a low 6.1 air yards per attempt that would have ranked last among qualifying quarterbacks. He also took sacks at a high 9% rate.”

Browning only sits behind Kirk Cousins in the rankings, which, frankly, is pretty fair, right?

The above is the catch with Browning, which fans saw in Week 2 against Jacksonville. He’s not going to go wild trying to extend plays like Burrow does. But he will throw darts and let the league’s best wideout room attempt to make a play. He’s not going to air it deep often, but he’ll put it in the right places to keep the offense moving.

Would Browning succeed in other locations without the Bengals’ weapons? It’s a fair question, but there’s a good reason the Bengals aren’t panicking and searching for a quarterback to acquire who can push him for the starting job.
