Is it time for fantasy football managers to turn to Troy Franklin?

Franklin leads all Denver Broncos wide receivers in targets (15), receptions (12), receiving yards (133) and first downs (six) through two games, but most of that production came in Week 2. So, was it a fluke, or a sign of things to come for the second-year wide receiver?

Broncos coach Sean Payton said this week that he’s been “really impressed” with Franklin dating back to training camp, so it seems fair to assume he could remain the WR2 behind Courtland Sutton.

“I think he’s starting to develop into the player that everybody ultimately knows he can become,” quarterback Bo Nix said. “I’ve mentioned he looks as comfortable and confident as he looked in college. I think that’s starting to show, and I knew he always was going to have that in him.

“It’s good to see him with the self-confidence to go out there, and make those plays, and continue to do it and play the whole game like he did. So I expect a lot, not necessarily more, because he did a lot. I expect just consistency from him, and I know he’s going to give us everything he has.”

Last week, the Indianapolis Colts focused on taking Sutton out of Denver’s game plan, and that opened things up for Franklin to have a big game with eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown. Sutton hasn’t been surprised by Franklin’s emergence.

“I feel like Troy came into OTAs and training camp with this laser focus,” Sutton said. “Troy and I sit next to each other in meetings and watching how Troy takes coaching, he’s always taken coaching really well, even last year. Stuff would happen and Troy was always [saying], ‘Yes sir, yes sir, yes sir.’ There was never any attitude, and he was always willing to learn. I think he’s taken that to another level. He has this laser focus and you can see it all over him.

“If he does something in practice and Coach Payton is coaching him up on the route or something, he’s just like completely locked into coach and how he can make himself better. The same thing goes within the meeting room. He takes coaching very well, and his attention to detail has been really fun to see him take that next step. That is the biggest thing for young guys. Being able to take that step from rookie year to the second year and finding out how to better become a better pro.”

This week, the Broncos will face the Los Angeles Chargers, whose secondary ranks middle-of-the-pack through two games, allowing 399 passing yards (which ranks 16th). After throwing three touchdown passes in Week 2, Nix will look to have another strong showing in Week 3. If Franklin has another game with the most or second-most targets in Denver’s offense, fantasy football managers should feel confident that his expanded role is here to stay.
