The Chicago Bears will welcome back an old friend (or enemy, depending) when Matt Eberflus and the Dallas Cowboys come to Soldier Field for a late-window clash on Sunday.

Eberflus served as the Bears head coach for three years (2022-24) before being fired following a disastrous Thanksgiving outing against the Detroit Lions, where game management ultimately proved to be his demise. He finished with a dismal 14-32 record. But what Eberflus lacked as a head coach he made up for as a defensive coordinator, as Chicago’s unit was a solid one.

Now, Eberflus, the Cowboys new defensive coordinator, will be tasked with disrupting quarterback Caleb Williams, who he was asked to develop last season. Williams was asked about facing his former head coach this Sunday, and he made it clear that it’s just like any other “chess match” any given week.

“Every game is a chess match,” Williams said. “Being able to adjust and adjust again and adjust again. Because that’s what football constantly comes down to. Through all four quarters, being able to adjust and figure out what they’re doing. Then when they change it up or have their little wrinkle for that week, you’re able to adjust and adjust one more time.

“It’s like playing point guard. The defense throws a bunch of stuff at you and being able to just decipher what it is. Maybe we should check down and it goes for four yards to keep us ahead of sticks or on track. Being able to find a deep throw to throw the dagger in there. Go make big plays for the Chicago Bears. I think it’s a constant chess match throughout each week. Like you said, he was my coach. He’s a defensive coordinator and he coached me; he had tendencies himself, and I had tendencies myself. I think I’ve grown, and he’s probably grown as a defensive coordinator. Being able to, like I said, go in there and adjust.”

Williams has faced an Eberflus defense before having practiced against this Bears defense during his rookie season. And while some things will change, Williams has a good understanding of what Eberflus will likely throw at him — and Eberflus knows exactly how to rattle Williams. As Williams said, it will be quite the chess match on Sunday.
