The Seattle Seahawks have been linked with a potential reunion with free-agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin all offseason long. After allegedly meeting with Griffin earlier in April, a report emerged this week that the two sides are engaging in discussions. Just hours later, former Seahawks EDGE Jadeveon Clowney also hit the open market following his release from the Carolina Panthers.

If the Seahawks pursue one of these reunions, it should clearly be with Griffin. The former third-round pick made a Pro Bowl with the team in 2019. GM John Schneider drafted Griffin in 2017, and he’s one of the few remaining assets within the organization dating back to the cornerback’s first tenure in Seattle.

Griffin may be a little past his prime, but he remained effective for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. The ex UCF standout appeared in all 17 regular-season contests, earning a stellar coverage grade of 62.4 from Pro Football Focus. The Seahawks have a need for depth at boundary cornerback behind Riq Woolen and Josh Jobe. Schneider surprisingly didn’t draft a corner, and Shemar Jean-Charles was the lone free-agent addition to date.

Meanwhile Clowney is coming off a down 5.5 sack season in Carolina. The Seahawks possess terrific depth at EDGE, with DeMarcus Lawrence, Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe, and Derick Hall at the position. It’s clear that Griffin would help the 2025 Seahawks more than Clowney would.
