Sean Payton loves to help former players transition to coaching.
Payton’s coaching tree includes ex-players like Zach Strief, Chris Banjo and Davis Webb. He’d like to add a former New Orleans Saints lineman to the list, but Payton’s latest offer has been met with resistance.

Terron Armstead, a five-time Pro Bowler who announced his retirement this spring, quickly heard from Payton after hanging up his cleats. “He wants me to work with him or for him in whatever capacity,” Armstead said during an interview with Kay Adams in April. More recently, Armstead indicated his answer to Payton’s offer was thanks, but no thanks.
“Sean Payton called me two days after I retired, he wanted me to come coach for him,” Armstead told New Orleans reporters earlier this month, via John Sigler of Saints Wire. “I said, Sean, I appreciate you, but no. I’m not doing it, especially not with him. Because (laughing), his hours is — nah, it’s not for me.”
So Armstead won’t be joining Payton’s staff, at least not at the moment. Payton currently has 18 former Saints employed with the Broncos, and retired running back Darren Sproles is set to join the list as a coaching intern next year. Armstead might change his mind down the road, but for now, he’s a former player Payton hasn’t been able to recruit to the coaching side.
