Ralphie VII made her debut at Folsom Field on Saturday night and got off to a much faster start than the Colorado football team.
Both wound up having a successful night, however, in front of a sold-out crowd of 53,442 celebrating Family Weekend.
After Ralphie VII’s speedy debut, the Buffaloes shook off a slow start to knock off Wyoming, 37-20, in the first meeting between the teams in 16 years.
Senior Kaidon Salter returned to the starting lineup at quarterback and threw for 304 yards – his first 300-yard game since 2023 – and three touchdowns to lead the Buffs (2-2), who rebounded from a loss at Houston a week ago. Salter also ran for 86 yards and a touchdown.
A scoreless first quarter featured three pass interference penalties on CU defensive backs, but Wyoming was unable to take advantage.
CU then got its offense going late in the first quarter with a 13-play, 85-yard drive that went into the second quarter. Salter hit Omarion Miller in the back of the end zone for a 29-yard touchdown pass to get the scoring started.
Wyoming responded with a 28-yard field goal from Erik Sandvik, but CU didn’t take long to answer.
Just five plays after the field goal, Salter connected with Sincere Brown for a 68-yard touchdown pass to put the Buffs ahead 14-3.
CU forced another Wyoming punt and then went to work again on offense. Salter directed a 67-yard scoring drive capped by Simeon Price’s 1-yard touchdown run. That gave the Buffs a 21-3 lead at halftime, and they wasted little time in adding to that in the third quarter.
Salter had a 20-yard run on the second play of the third quarter and followed that with a 47-yard touchdown pass to Joseph Williams on the next play to make it 28-3.
Wyoming didn’t go away quietly, though, scoring on its next two possessions to pull within 28-13. Kaden Anderson hit Eric Richardson for a 41-yard touchdown pass, and then Sandvik drilled a 38-yard field goal.
CU went on the march again and Micah Welch had a 44-yard run, but he fumbled at the end of it and Wyoming recovered at its 1-yard line. Three plays later, Anderson was sacked in the end zone by the Buffs’ Arden Walker for a safety to increase CU’s lead to 30-13.
After the safety, CU tried to add more to the lead, but Alejandro Mata’s 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked. It was the fourth straight game in which Wyoming has blocked a kick.
Anderson then led the Cowboys on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that chewed up 6:49 off the clock. He capped that march with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Chris Durr Jr. to pull the Cowboys within 30-20 with 4:32 to play.
CU tacked on a late score, as Salter sprinted through the middle of the Cowboys’ defense for a 35-yard touchdown run with 1:46 to go.
