The Seattle Seahawks added standout wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to their injury report on Saturday, listing him as questionable with an illness for Sunday afternoon’s Week 3 home matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
Seahawks make 3 roster moves ahead of Saints game
Smith-Njigba is off to a scorching start this season, with 17 catches for 227 yards through Seattle’s first two games. He currently ranks second in the NFL in receiving yardage, trailing only New York Giants star Malik Nabers. He also has the second-most receiving yards through the first two weeks of a season in Seahawks franchise history, trailing only Tyler Lockett’s 278 yards in 2021.
Smith-Njigba, the clear-cut WR1 in Seattle’s new-look receiving room, was a one-man show in the season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He was targeted on 13 of 22 passes from Sam Darnold in that game, and finished with 124 of the team’s 150 receiving yards.
The Seahawks’ passing attack was much more balanced in their Week 2 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith-Njigba still topped the century mark, hauling in eight catches for 103 yards – including a pivotal 43-yard reception that helped key a game-sealing touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. But after Seattle’s other pass catchers totaled just seven catches for 26 yards on nine targets against San Francisco, they hauled in a combined 14 catches for 192 yards on 20 targets against Pittsburgh.
Smith-Njigba, a 2023 first-round draft pick out of Ohio State, had 628 receiving yards as a rookie before exploding for an 1,130-yard breakout campaign in 2024. He finished 12th in the NFL in receiving yardage last season.
If Smith-Njigba is unable to play on Sunday, the Seahawks would have four healthy wide receivers on their active roster: Cooper Kupp, rookie Tory Horton, Jake Bobo and Dareke Young. They also have a pair of receiving threats at tight end in AJ Barner and rookie Elijah Arroyo.
Kupp had a strong performance against Pittsburgh, finishing with seven catches for 90 yards. Horton added two catches for 32 yards against the Steelers, highlighted by a 21-yard TD reception on the opening drive. Barner also had a TD grab and finished with two catches for 26 yards, while Arroyo chipped in two receptions for 31 yards.
