The New York Giants will host the Kansas City Chiefs at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday Night Football in Week 3, where they will look to pick up an upset victory and avoid falling to 0-3. But they could be without several players, including veteran defensive lineman Chauncey Golston.

The Chiefs have struggled offensively this season outside of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen will be in charge of stopping on Sunday.

New York will enter the game banged up, with several players already on injured reserve (IR) and one more ruled out: Linebacker Darius Muasau (concussion/eye). Two others are doubtful, and three are questionable.

Chauncey Golston injury update

Chauncey Golston did not practice at all this week due to an ankle injury, and his status for Sunday night seems tenious at best. He did some running on Friday, but that was the extent of his work.

“Golston has an ankle. We’ll back off him today,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Monday.

Golston appeared in each of the Giants’ first two games this season, recording two tackles as a rotating reserve. He can play defensive end, defensive tackle, and outside linebacker in Bowen’s system, and was one of the team’s prized free agent pickups this offseason.

Will Chauncey Golston play vs. Chiefs?

Golston seemingly suffered an ankle injury in a Week 2 loss against the Dallas Cowboys and proceeded to sit out of practice all week. The Giants designated the veteran as questionable on the injury report after he did some running, including a few sprints, on Friday afternoon at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.

However, the signing of practice squad linebacker Tomon Fox to the Giants’ 53-man roster is an indication that Golston may be inactive in Week 3.

Who would replace Chauncey Golston in the rotation?

Golston is a key reserve in that he plays multiple positions. Already without linebacker Victor Dimukeje (PUP), and with defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches (foot, doubtful) unlikely to play, the Giants are running low on bodies.

Golston is listed as the primary backup to linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux on the team’s depth chart, and there’s no one behind him. Rookie Abdul Carter is the primary backup to veteran linebacker Brian Burns, but Golston has also filled in there.

The only viable replacement option is Tomon Fox, who was signed off the practice squad on Saturday. He’s bounced around from the practice squad to the active roster over his four-year career, appearing in 28 games (one start), while recording 39 tackles (23 solo, five for a loss), four QB hits, and 2.0 sacks.
