Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is used to telling his defenses to deliver big hits. He’s not used to being on the receiving end of those types of hits, though.
Quinn took a massive shot on the sideline Sunday after his own quarterback, Marcus Mariota, ran out of bounds and into the coach. The hit looked pretty brutal on replay. Quinn got hit in the face and appeared to smack his head on the ground.
The 55-year-old Quinn remained on the field for the end of the half, and had blood on his face when the team hit a field goal to end the second quarter.
Quinn is known for being a hard-nosed coach. The former coordinator rose to prominence leading the “Legion of Boom” Seattle Seahawks defense. That defense was known for hard hits and intimidating play.

Quinn, who played linebacker and defensive line at Salisbury University, took hits over his own playing career. It’s just probably been a while since he’s taken or delivered a hit with that level of intensity.

Quinn got cleaned up at halftime and said he was OK. He even took part in a sideline interview with a less bloody face before the start of the third quarter.
Quinn used the hit — and his wounds — as a motivational tactic, saying he expected today’s game to be physical.
