We were all spoiled last week, apparently. After Week 2 brought a ton of scoring for fantasy football managers, we are seeing about the opposite through the first half of football in most of the 1 p.m. ET window for Week 3. In fact, the lack of scoring early in Week 3 has opened up the possibility that we see a defense or kicker lead the week in fantasy scoring. Let’s take a look.

Again, it’s still pretty early and hopefully scoring starts to pick up at the skill positions, but the Minnesota Vikings D/ST looks like the smash play of the week. With 28 fantasy points in the first half, the Vikings D/ST is feasting against backup QB Jake Browning and the Cincinnati Bengals sans Joe Burrow.

Going into halftime, Minnesota held a 34-3 lead thanks to four turnovers from the Bengals, two of those that went the other way for touchdowns (if you somehow have CB Isaiah Rodgers in IDP leagues, good for you, he had both TDs). The Vikings also had one sack at halftime, and you can expect that number to increase with Browning likely needing to throw the entire second half.

Not far behind the Vikings D/ST, you’ll find the Colts and Bucs units creeping up the scoring leaderboard. The Colts are facing the Titans and opened up the game with a pick-six of rookie QB Cam Ward. Indy also has a few sacks on Ward and it’s looking like another positive game script for that defense the rest of the afternoon. The Colts were up to 19 points as the third quarter got underway.

The Bucs ended the first half with a pick-six of Jets backup QB Tyrod Taylor to make it 20-6. New York is without QB Justin Fields due to a concussion this week and turned to Taylor to avoid an 0-3 start to the season. Things aren’t looking good for the Jets, who will have to throw to play catch up. Taylor has only mustered 55 passing yards so far in the contest.

Mid-writing of this article, we had another pick-six, this time for the Panthers, who have a surprising lead on the Falcons. Atlanta entered the week as a trendy streaming defense after a great performance in Week 2 vs. the Vikings. The Falcons will have to do a lot to come back down 17-0 to their division rival as the third quarter progresses. The Panthers are up to 18 fantasy points.

The other surprise top scorer so far is Rams K Joshua Karty. Los Angeles is sticking it to the defending champions on the road as the second half is underway in Philly. Karty has gotten plenty of work, a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on point after attempts. He’s up to 17 points, which is among the highest scoring players so far in Week 3 because of the lack of offensive touchdowns.

It’s been a weird week so far for fantasy football managers but there’s still time for our rosters to rebound!

This story will be updated after the 1 p.m. ET slate ends.
