When the Washington Commanders drafted Virginia Tech wide receiver Jayden Daniels in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL draft, general manager Adam Peters called him the best punt returner in the draft.

Through the first two games, we’ve seen glimpses of Lane’s ability as a punt returner, but he had yet to break one. Lane almost broke one in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, but was tripped up. Unfortunately, a holding penalty brought it back anyway.

Lane wasn’t done.

In the third quarter, Lane took the Raiders’ punt 90 yards to the house. It was the longest punt return so far of the young NFL season. Per Next Gen Stats, Lane was recorded at 20.56 MPH.

Lane also made some history with his punt return for a touchdown, becoming the first Washington rookie since Desmond Howard to return a punt for a touchdown.

Lane just missed a touchdown in the first half, dropping a pass from quarterback Marcus Mariota that would have made his day even better.

It looks like the Commanders have finally found their punt returner.
