In a game where the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offense and defense both had period of struggle, the special teams unit came up clutch.

Two blocked field goals in the fourth quarter were just enough to give the Eagles a Week 3 win over the Los Angeles Rams to move Philadelphia to 3-0 and the Rams to 2-1. The Rams went just 1 for 4 on converting their red zone trips into touchdowns, and their reliance on field goals ended up being their demise in what ended up being a one-score loss.

Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis blocked kicker Joshua Karty’s 44-yard field goal attempt and returned it for a touchdown as time expired to put the final nail in the Rams’ proverbial coffin.

The Eagles will go on the road next week to face off against the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Rams head home in Week 4 to host the Indianapolis Colts, who are off to a 3-0 start in the Daniel Jones era.

Rams need to find 6, not 3

The Rams entered Week 3’s matchup having converted 5 of 9 red zone trips into touchdowns. They exited Week 3 with a 6-for-13 mark in red zone trips, with their 1-for-4 mark on Sunday dooming them to a one-score loss after holding a 26-7 lead early in the second half. Los Angeles will need to be better about converting those red zone trips into six points instead of relying on their field goal unit to keep up in a competitive NFC field.

A.J. Brown has been found

The Eagles re-discovered just how good of a player A.J. Brown was, and it only took them two weeks to do it. Brown finished the first half with zero catches, meaning he remained a six catches for the season through five halves of play. In the second half alone, the Eagles’ lead receiver tallied six catches – matching his total for the season to that point – and 109 yards with a touchdown. Philadelphia’s offensive performance on Sunday flipped completely on its head –and in the Eagles’ favor – once they got Brown more involved.

Defensive Line of Doom

Jordan Davis (and Jalen Carter) are bad, bad men. The two star defensive linemen combined for two blocked field goals down the stretch in the Eagles’ Week 3 win. Davis even returned his block for a touchdown as time expired to put the icing on the cake of a victory that keeps the Eagles undefeated.

Rams run defense stops Saquon

The Rams’ run defense looked legit. Los Angeles stacked the box often and managed to hold Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley to 46 yards on 18 carries (2.6 yards per carry) on Sunday. It was a good enough effort to force Philadelphia to turn to quarterback Jalen Hurts and the passing offense near the start of the second half, which ultimately worked out much better for the Eagles in the end.

Karty’s final field goal attempt of the game was the most pivotal. His 44-yard attempt was blocked by Jordan Davis as time expired, and the big man returned the kick for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 33-26 win.

The Eagles move to 3-0.

The Eagles capitalized on the Rams’ missed kick to put together a 91-yard touchdown drive over seven minutes to storm back to a lead. Smith’s four-yard catch on fourth down finished off the drive.

Philadelphia’s two-point attempt failed, but the Eagles now lead, 27-26, with 1:48 to play.

Once again, Philadelphia’s defense manages not to break after bending, and the Rams tried to settle for another red zone field goal. Instead, Eagles defensive linemen Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis soared above Los Angeles’ blockers to each get a hand on the ball after the kick.

The Rams still hold a 26-21 lead, but the Eagles will take over with another chance to take the lead with just under nine minutes to go.

Los Angeles went for it on fourth down for the first time in the game after crossing midfield and with one yard to go, but Eagles defensive tackle Jordan Davis got to Rams running back Kyren Williams before he could cross the line of scrimmage.

Philadelphia takes over on downs near the 50-yard line with 14 minutes left in the game and the Rams still leading, 26-21.

An eight-yard pass from Stafford to Nacua on third down was initially ruled a catch on the field. Then the NFL’s “replay assist” system flagged it, automatically overturning the play to an incompletion.

The Rams then challenged the call successfully, which turned the ruling back into its original ruling of a catch.

The end result? A new set of downs for the Rams.

Brown managed to create separation from his defender late in his route to get open in the front-right corner of the end zone, and Hurts completed the pitch-and-catch for a touchdown.

The Eagles have cut their deficit to just five points in the third quarter. It’s 26-21 Rams with just over two minutes left in the period.

Philadelphia started throwing the ball more in their second possession of the second half, and a couple of deep passes – one to Brown, then one to tight end Dallas Goedert – put the Eagles back on the board with their second touchdown of the game.

The Rams still lead, 26-14, just over three minutes into the second half.

Brown, who entered the game with six catches through two weeks, didn’t record a reception in the first half. The Eagles opened their second possession of the second half with a throw to Brown, and the crowd in Philadelphia sarcastically cheered for the receiver’s first catch of the day. A few plays later, Brown snagged his second catch of the day, a 38-yard catch after a bobble.

The second half could not have started much worse for the Eagles. A good kickoff strategy from Rams kicker Joshua Karty backed Philadelphia up to their own 10-yard line to begin the third quarter. Two plays later, Verse, the reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, got through for a sack and forced quarterback Jalen Hurts to fumble.

The Rams recovered, and on their first play from scrimmage, Stafford hit Williams on a screen pass, and the running back took the pass the rest of the way for a 10-yard receiving score.

It’s 26-7 Rams moments into the second half.

The Rams have 212 offensive yards to the Eagles’ 34, but they’ve largely had to settle for field goals in the first half.

Karty knocked through his latest of four first-half field goal tries, this one a 44-yard attempt, to give Los Angeles a 19-7 lead with 10 seconds left in the first half.

The Eagles’ defense bent, but did not break in a second drive in a row. They stopped the Rams’ offense at the 15-yard line, and Los Angeles sent Karty out for his third field goal of the day.

It’s 16-7 Rams after the kicker knocked through his 33-yard attempt with 3:43 left in the second quarter.

Williams had appeared to extend the Rams’ lead to 17-7 with a rushing touchdown, but Rams center Coleman Shelton was flagged for holding. Stafford’s throw on the ensuing replay of third down soared over tight end Tyler Higbee’s head to bring up fourth down.

Los Angeles settled for a 28-yard field goal from Karty to bring their lead to 13-7 with 9:15 remaining in the first half.

The Philadelphia Eagles appeared to get away with a false start on their signature “Tush Push” play in the first quarter of their Week 3 game against the Los Angeles Rams.

The play in question occurred on the Eagles’ first offensive drive. They were facing a fourth-and-1 on Los Angeles’ 3-yard line when they lined up in Tush Push formation and had quarterback Jalen Hurts bull forward for a first down.

However, it was clear right guard Tyler Steen began moving forward before the ball was snapped. Despite this, no flag was thrown on the play.

McCollough, who joined the Rams as an undrafted free agent last year, got home when he was left unblocked on a safety blitz on an Eagles third-and-8 play. The play knocked Philadelphia back 10 yards and set the stage for a punt to begin the second quarter after a three-and-out possession.

The Rams still lead, 10-7, at the end of the first quarter.

Quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with veteran receiver Davante Adams on a 41-yard touchdown pass. It was Adams’ second touchdown with the Rams and his second straight week with a score.

Los Angeles now leads, 10-7, with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

The Los Angeles placekicker drilled a 51-yard field goal in response to the Eagles’ touchdown drive to cap off a nine-play, 37-yard drive. The Rams still trail, 7-3, with four minutes left in the first quarter.

Eagles vs. Rams prediction

This one might be a toss-up. Vegas seems to believe this matchup will be close, and with the way both teams are playing, it should be. Matthew Stafford has rekindled his connection with Puka Nacua, while Davante Adams seems to have something special cooking with him, as well. This will be the most polished unit that the Rams defense has to play against this season, though A.J. Brown has yet to get going. That said, the Eagles are loaded and have the benefit of playing at home, so give us the Eagles in a tight one on Sunday afternoon.

Prediction: Eagles 27, Rams 24

Before they face the Eagles, the boo birds were out for Rams pass rusher Jared Verse. Verse took the field to a healthy serving on boos on Sunday afternoon.

Verse was public enemy No. 1 of Eagles fans earlier this year, when he voiced his disdain for Philly faithful: “I hate them,” he said in January, before making nice with the fanbase in June.

Running back Will Shipley returned to practice this week but he will not play vs. the Rams. Azeez Ojulari is inactive once again, the third time this season.

Defensive end Braden Fiske is active today after nursing an oblique injury, and will play vs. Philadelphia.

All eyes are on the chess match between the Rams’ star receivers and the Eagles’ secondary. Speaking pregame specifically on his matchup with cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, Adams is ready to take the youngin’ to school.

“He’s a great young player … But I’m hoping I can show him a few things he’s never seen, never had to deal with before today,” Adams said.
