SEATTLE, Wa. (WLBT) – The New Orleans Saints fall to 0-3 for the first time since 2016 after the Seattle Seahawks dominated the Saints in all three phases which led to a blowout, 44-13.
The special team miscues started early for the Saints when Seattle’s Tory Horton returned a punt 95 yards after a three-and-out on the Saints’ second drive. Then, on the Saints very next possession, D’Anthony Bell blocked a Kai Kroger punt which resulted in a touchdown.
The Saints also allowed a 60-yard kickoff return deep in their territory after a Blake Grupe field goal to finally get the Saints on the board in the second quarter.
Penalties continued to be an issue for the Saints as well, racking up 11 penalties for 77 yards. An early Bryan Breese personal foul on third down would eventually lead to Seattle’s first touchdown of the game.
Sam Darnold finished his day 14-of-18 for 218 yards with two touchdowns. Spencer Rattler finished 28-of-39 for 218 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Chris Olave led the team in receiving, finishing with 10 catches for 57 yards. Alvin Kamara was the guy on the ground but only mustered 42 yards on 18 carries which is just 2.3 yards a carry.
Defensively, the Saints continued to struggle to find a pass rush as they were unable to secure a single sack. They also only had three QB hits and pressured Darnold just five times, which is tied for the third-lowest number of times he’s been under pressure as a starter.
Saints fans did get to see second-round rookie Tyler Shough take his first NFL snaps late in the game, but he was unable to complete a pass.
Things don’t get easier for the Saints next week either. They have another tough road test next Sunday at noon, facing reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen and the Bills in Buffalo.
