Sunday was a big day for Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey. The second-year wide receiver scored his first NFL touchdown, a 43-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Marcus Mariota in the fourth quarter of a 41-24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

As McCaffrey was running to the end zone, you could see a Washington player running down the sideline to meet him in the end zone. It was Deebo Samuel. Several players joined McCaffrey in the end zone after McCaffrey jumped into the stands to celebrate with fans. It was a moment that he’ll never forget.

He did almost forget something important: the football. Thankfully, Terry McLaurin rushed down the sideline to retrieve the football and give it back to McCaffrey. Luke McCaffrey’s father, Ed, appreciated McLaurin’s gesture.

Ed McCaffrey knows a little something about playing wide receiver in the NFL, having played for 13 seasons and winning three Super Bowls.

What did Luke McCaffrey think about his first touchdown?

“Yeah, it was a lot of fun,” McCaffrey said after the game. “It was a good situation, a good ball. I’ll probably have to watch the tape. I probably blacked out a little bit.”

McCaffrey finished with three catches for 56 yards and the touchdown. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to get a player going. That’s what the Commanders hope with McCaffrey.

As for his teammates, there was genuine excitement for McCaffrey on Sunday, which aligns with head coach Dan Quinn’s “brotherhood” mentality.
