The Seattle Seahawks took care of business against the winless New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon, exploding for 38 first-half points on their way to a 44-13 blowout victory that improved them to 2-1.
Macdonald: Even after rout, Seahawks far from ‘satisfied’
The Seahawks led 38-6 at halftime, which was tied for the fifth-largest halftime lead in franchise history. It also was the largest halftime lead by any NFL team since Week 15 of the 2023 season, according to Pro Football Talk.
Before flipping the page to Thursday night’s divisional clash against the Arizona Cardinals, let’s take a look back at some notable stats from the Seahawks’ first three games.
• 323 – Jaxon Smith-Njigba has a franchise-best 323 receiving yards through the first three weeks, which ranks second in the NFL behind Los Angeles Rams wideout Puka Nacua. Smith-Njigba had 124 yards against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1, 103 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2 and 96 yards in less than three quarters of action against the Saints.
• 1 – Rookie wide receiver Tory Horton is the only player in NFL history to have at least two touchdown catches and a punt return touchdown through the first three games of his career, according to Stathead. Horton has a touchdown reception in each of the past two games, along with a franchise-record 95-yard punt-return score against the Saints.
• 3 – The Seahawks have surrendered just three sacks this season, which is tied for the second-fewest in the NFL. They are one of just four teams in the league with three or fewer sacks allowed. Last year, Seattle gave up eight sacks through the first three weeks.
• 9.0 – Sam Darnold is averaging 9.0 yards per pass attempt this season, which ranks third in the NFL behind Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. During his breakout campaign with the Minnesota Vikings last year, Darnold finished sixth in the league at 7.9 yards per pass attempt.
• 3.3 – Seattle’s rushing attack has averaged just 3.3 yards per carry this season, which ranks 28th in the NFL. The Seahawks averaged 4.0 yards per carry against the Steelers, but mustered just 3.2 yards per carry against the 49ers and 2.6 yards per carry against the Saints.
• 15.7 – The Seahawks rank second in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing just 15.7 points per game through the first three weeks. They are the only team in the league to hold each of their first three opponents to 17 points or fewer. They also are yielding a league-low 1.31 points per drive.
• 3.2 – Seattle’s run defense has allowed just 3.2 yards per carry this season, which ranks third in the NFL. The Seahawks are one of just two teams that have yielded 3.5 yards per carry or fewer in each of their first three games. For context, Seattle did that just twice over the entirety of last season.
• 5 – The Seahawks’ defense has five takeaways through the first three weeks, which is tied for fourth-most in the NFL. All five takeaways have come on interceptions, with Seattle ranking second in the league in that category. Last year, the Seahawks didn’t come up with their fifth takeaway until Week 7.
• 2.5 – Byron Murphy II has 2.5 sacks through the first three games, which ranks second among all defensive tackles. The 2024 first-round pick followed a 1.5-sack performance against the Steelers by recording another sack against the Saints. It continues a second-year statistical breakout for Murphy, who recorded just 0.5 sacks in 14 games last season.
• 2 – The Seahawks rank second in the NFL in both yards per punt return (26.0) and yards per kick return (31.6). That’s due in large part to Horton’s franchise-record 95-yard punt return touchdown and Dareke Young’s 60-yard kick return against the Saints.
