Gabriel Zarate, 13, was bestowed the honor of Athlete of the Week on Sept. 15 by the Las Vegas Raiders Silver and Black Organization.

An eighth-grade student at Charles Hughes Middle School, this young man excels in almost everything he endeavors to do. He is the wide receiver for the Bulldogs football team, which is part of the Silver and Black Flag Football League. This consists of 28 teams that compete across Clark County. Last year, Gabriel intercepted the ball, doing a juggling act to claim the championship title for his team.

Football is Gabriel’s passion. Even before he began playing seven years ago, he was enthralled with the sport, attending all football games with his father and practicing. His family is his fan base.

“My father attends every game, drives him to every practice and supports him in all of his activities,” Paola, his older sister, said proudly. “My father purchased a camera and tripod to film all of his son’s events.”

Paola added that Gabriel is the pride and joy of the family.

“There is quite an age difference among the siblings. My oldest brother is 26. I am 23, and Gabriel is 13. We are so proud of everything he has accomplished. He is also the star of the basketball team; he has been on the honor roll several times, along with being student of the month. But it is his love for football that was cemented in him. Even our dog is a fan of his, as he attends every game.”

She went on to say that Gabriel works hard for everything he gets and is very respectful.

The Las Vegas Raiders recognized Gabriel’s athletic ability, inviting him and a guest to come to Allegiant Stadium to and see the Raiders play the San Diego Chargers, along with field sideline activities.

Of course, without hesitation, Gabriel brought his father.

Gabriel will be attending Virgin Valley High School and then plans to go to college. His future goals? “Sports!”

Both Paola and Gabriel credited the Las Vegas Raiders, who honor the youth of Nevada by hosting events such as the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year Celebration and donating equipment to local football leagues. They also help support youth development through grants.
