TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner can’t get around like normal given his season-ending foot injury.

That hasn’t stopped him from still bringing the juice in the locker room, especially when it comes to Trey Benson.

Safe to say Cardinals RB James Conner is excited for Trey Benson’s increased workload moving forward.

“I almost seen him jump up,” Benson said Wednesday when asked about Conner’s excitement for him. “He can’t even jump right now. I know he’s happy for me. It’s devastating what happened to him. I’m going to continue to live on his legacy.”

That extra juice could come in handy for the second-year pro as he steps into a larger role within a Cardinals offense that has sputtered to say the least through three weeks.

And although Conner has been Arizona’s lead back through three games, it’s Benson who has been getting more out of his opportunities on the ground.

Granted it’s an early sample size, but Benson paces the Cardinals rushing attack with 21 carries for 125 yards as Arizona’s primary third-down back.

He hasn’t found the end zone (yet) in 2025 — that mark belongs to Conner (one) — but has brought an explosive element to the ground game with a pair of chunk plays that went for 52 and 29 yards, respectively.

Benson is also second in the league among qualified runners (19 rushing attempts or more) with an impressive six yards per carry.

The running back has also reeled in eight of his 11 targets for 45 yards and is well on his way to career marks across the board in that department, too.

It’s a credit to the work Benson put in this offseason, leading many to believe a Year 2 jump was on the horizon, with or without Conner’s injury impacting things.

But it’s his mindset which could really give him a leg up as the reps pile up that much more.

Cardinals RB Trey Benson is focused on not making the moment bigger than it is knowing he’s in line for more touches with James Conner out for the season.

“Just keep doing what I’m doing and not making the moment bigger than what it is,” Benson said. “Continue doing what I was doing three games before, continue being decisive, continue to make good decisions and continue to help the team out.

“I feel like I’m prepared for it,” the running back added. “God wouldn’t give me the task if I wasn’t prepared for it.”

That’s good, because Benson and the ground game are going to need every bit of added juice and preparation if they hope to have a chance against the Seattle Seahawks run-wrecking defense.

It doesn’t take long to find Seattle on the list of run stoppers, posting a league-leading zero touchdowns allowed. It’s third in rushing yards given up at 3.2 yards per play and seventh in rushing yards per game with 90.

Seattle’s been a bomb squad against explosives, too, allowing just two runs of at least 10 yards through three weeks. The Cleveland Browns (two) are the only other defense that can say that.

“We got to establish the run so we can open up the pass game or vice versa,” Benson said. “Just keep doing what we’ve been doing, keep fighting, keep stacking the days and like I said, I can’t wait for it.

“(The Cardinals run game is) right there,” he added. “We’re one block away every single time, most likely.”
