The Ravens’ defensive struggles have been well-documented over the season’s first few weeks. And according to reports, the team took a step towards addressing at least one of those concerns with Wednesday’s signing.

Baltimore’s defense has been a big reason why a lot of folks’ preseason Super Bowl favorites are 1-2 to start the year — giving up 41 points to Josh Allen and the Bills in the Week 1 opener and 38 to the Lions on “Monday Night Football.”

And despite winning big against the Browns 10 days ago, Cleveland’s 17 points are a season-high thus far after scoring just 16 and 13 in their other two games.

Ravens make defensive signing

On Wednesday, the team added some depth on the defensive line to try and keep some fresh legs on the field and disrupt opposing offenses.

Per the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, “The Ravens are signing veteran DT Taven Bryan to the practice squad, source says. The former first-round pick gets added to the mix in Baltimore with DT Nnamdi Madubuike dealing with a neck injury.”

Bryant was the 29th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of Florida (three picks before Lamar Jackson) and has seen action with the Jaguars, Browns and Colts over the course of his seven years in the NFL — but most recently signed with the Cincinnati Bengals before being released at the end of last month’s preseason.

The interior D-lineman has recorded 154 tackles and 11.5 sacks in his career and has also registered 34 QB hits and 24 TFLs.

Baltimore not trying to ‘reinvent the wheel’

Monday night’s loss marked the first time in four years that the Ravens defense didn’t record a single sack. Prompting All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton to say that it’s time for the team to get back to basics.

“[We have] Pro Bowl and All-Pro guys all over the field, and shame on us if we need a Pro Bowl guy to play good defense,” Hamilton said, via ESPN.com. “I think we have a plethora of guys who have accolades, but there are teams in the league that don’t have that and play good defense.”

“I don’t think it’s as much of a personnel thing, as it is just a running [and] hitting thing. We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel,” he added. “We just have to go play football.”

Things presumably won’t get any easier going into this weekend’s game vs. Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs. But the Ravens open as 2.5-point favorites on the road in the 2023 AFC Championship rematch.
