Penix was relegated to the bench in favor of Kirk Cousins during the Atlanta Falcons’ Week 3 loss to the Carolina Panthers, but it will not be a permanent move.
Head coach Raheem Morris made sure to let reporters know that Penix will not be getting benched for the bad game.
“We’re not even close to that with Mike. He had a bad day. We had a bad day,” Morris said.
“Mike is our quarterback. We got a lot of confidence in Mike.
“We’re moving forward with Mike. Mike’s the guy.”
Penix has failed to complete a touchdown pass to a wide receiver or tight end so far this season.
His only passing touchdown has come on a checkdown to running back Bijan Robinson that was taken 50 yards to the end zone.
Through three games, Penix has just 605 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.
He’s rushed for an additional 29 yards and one touchdown.
The Falcons are 1-2 to start the season.

Instead of benching Penix, the Falcons are making some organizational changes.
Wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard was fired on Tuesday.
His role is being taken over by passing game coordinator TJ Yates.
On top of that, offensive coordinator Zac Robinson is being removed from the coaches box and will coach from the sideline.

Sunday will prove if these changes moved the needle at all, as the Falcons face a tough opponent in the Washington Commanders.
If Penix continues to struggle, Cousins will be waiting on the bench for his opportunity.
Cousins led the Falcons to a 7-7 record last season before being benched.
He passed for 3,508 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 2024.
