Is Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Myles Murphy on the cusp of a breakout?

Bengals coaches seem to think so, as Murphy is one of the very small, lone bright points emerging in the aftermath of the team’s franchise-worst loss to Minnesota in Week 3.

Both Bengals head coach Zac Taylor and defensive coordinator Al Golden had lofty praise for Murphy on Thursday, with the latter going as far as suggesting Murphy’s violent play last week was possibly “a big moment for him moving forward,” according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.

The Bengals would love to see Murphy seize a bigger role in the rotation after a mild first few years in the league. He should get more of a chance to make his presence felt in Week 4, at least, with first-round rookie Shemar Stewart still nursing an injury. Bringing the intensity Golden liked last week to every snap he sees would be a good start, it seems.

If Murphy can fulfill breakout expectations coaches have suggested publicly since the offseason, it would give them two first-round products and a guy they really like in Joseph Ossai as the long-term core in a soon-to-be post-Trey Hendrickson world.

Looking at this week, though, they’ll certainly settle for a continued upward trend and a win over Denver.
