ASHBURN, Va. (7News) — The only people busier than the Washington Commanders this week may be the team’s training staff.
Multiple players, including quarterback Jayden Daniels, are nursing injuries. Their availability ahead of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons remains uncertain.
The good news is that Daniels was on the practice field for the second straight day on Thursday. Despite practicing in a limited capacity, Daniels told members of the media he feels good and is ready to play.
However, a hefty list of players did not practice on Thursday. Wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown did not participate, in addition to rookie running back Jacory ‘Bill’ Croskey-Merritt and tight end John Bates.
“It’s going to take all 11, for sure,” said defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw. “They’re going to come in and try to run the ball and we just have to do our job.”
Regardless of who lines up under center on Sunday, both Daniels and Mariota have the support of their teammates. If Daniels is unable to play, Mariota will start for the second straight week.
“I really believe it’s just empowering. I think our guys just feel like there’s a belief across the locker room regardless of if you’re the starter or not,” Mariota said. “When you have that type of belief, I think that really just allows guys to play their best.”
“At the end of the day it’s all about how I can be at my best for them,” added tight end Zach Ertz. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Jayden, doesn’t matter if it’s Marcus. I have to go out there, focus on my job, execute to the best of my availability, help them as much as I can.”
Following Sunday’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders, rookie wide receiver Jaylin Lane was named the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. Lane scored his first career touchdown, an impressive 90-yard punt return.
“They call that the JD5 award,” Lane said. “It’s definitely an honor, me being able to get that. It’s just a testament of God.”
“We have a quarterback who has won a lot of those awards, so it’s nice that he is willing to share,” joked linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Daniels won the award a record 11 times during his rookie season.
The Commanders and Falcons kick off Sunday at 1 p.m.
