The Houston Texans signed former Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus to their practice squad on Wednesday.

Cephus previously spent much of training camp and the preseason on the Texans’ roster; he was one of the final 12 players released before the final roster cut-down deadline on Aug. 26. His preseason playing time included catching a touchdown pass from former Wisconsin quarterback Graham Mertz. The former Badger wideout also recently spent parts of the 2024 season with the Buffalo Bills, Texans and Los Angeles Rams, though he was never able to make a regular season gameday active roster.

The veteran receiver originally began his career with the Detroit Lions after being selected with a 5th-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He excelled as a rookie, catching 20 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns. His second and third seasons were then defined by injury, unfortunately. His Lions career came to an end before the 2023 season after he was one of several players on the team suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.

Cephus was one of Wisconsin’s better wide receivers of the Paul Chryst era. His best season came in 2019: 59 receptions, 901 yards and seven touchdowns. Notably, no Wisconsin receiver has matched those yardage and touchdown totals since.

Cephus is now one step closer to a gameday active roster. The 0-3 Texans are back on the field on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.
