SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy might be limited, but Mac Jones is even more limited.
That’s how 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan described the situation regarding the quarterbacks during his appearance Thursday afternoon on KNBR’s “Dirty Work” radio show.
Shanahan expressed cautious optimism that Purdy will return to the starting lineup when the 49ers play the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
“I think it’s feeling better each day,” Shanahan said of Purdy. “And if that continues, he should be good on Sunday. But hopefully that continues. It’s always delicate with the toe.”
During the period of practice Thursday that is open to the media, Purdy took the first snaps ahead of Jones.
Purdy sustained a toe injury in the 49ers’ Week 1 victory at the Seattle Seahawks. He was inactive for the 49ers’ wins against the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
Jones took over and played well to lead the 49ers to the victories. However, Jones on Sunday aggravated a left knee injury that sidelined him late in training camp.
Jones, like Purdy, was limited in the team’s practices Wednesday and Thursday.
“He wasn’t able to do as much as Brock,” Shanahan said of Jones. “But I think he’s trending in the right direction. We’ll see (Friday). But he hasn’t been able to do much this week. But we have a long time until Sunday, and hopefully he’ll be ready by then.”
