SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy would not confirm who will be starting under center for the 49ers against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday but he appeared to move up in the sequence at San Francisco’s practice Thursday.

“We’ll see,” Brock said with a smile after practice. “I’m taking it day by day still, but feeling a lot better. It’s been good. Really like where I’m at with the progress, with it healing up, and feeling better dropping back, throwing and like where I’m at.”

Purdy, who initially sat out of practice after injuring his toe in Week 1, came back in a limited capacity as the 49ers prepared for Week 3. The quarterback, unable to practice at full speed, took practice reps after both Mac Jones and Adrian Martinez — essentially as the third in line.

On Thursday, Purdy resumed his place as the first quarterback to take a rep on the field during the early portion of practice. While this is not a confirmation of who will start, it is a sign that the Iowa State product is getting closer to taking back his starting role.

“For me it’s still a day-by-day thing,” Purdy said. “You know, going up to game time and, and see how I feel. But, I really do think that it’s been good progress, good work, and, and I just feel better overall just with my body and, and mentally of attacking this game plan and, being ready, if I’m able to go.”

Purdy has a slightly different group of receivers to target since he suited up for Week 1 in Seattle. Demarcus Robinson has been activated from the commissioner’s suspended/exempt list after missing three games, and Kendrick Bourne was signed by San Francisco prior to Week 2.

Purdy has had minimal work with both of the wideouts, but is dawning from work with Robinson during training camp and beginning to build chemistry with Bourne.

“It’s been great,” Purdy said. “I threw [Bourne] a ball this week and we were all excited that, you know, like for me to throw to him and, and continue to build this new chemistry. We were both really excited about that. I really do, obviously, like what I’ve seen on film, what he is done in the games with Mac.

“He’s a dependable guy. He knows the system with Kyle [Shanahan]. He’s been in it for years. And so for him to come back and, and bring the spark and energy for our offense, like I’m all about, hopefully we can find ways to give him the ball and keep him going.”

There is always a risk that players could re-aggravate an injury if they return to the field before they are fully ready. Purdy understands the circumstances, which is why he will only return to the game if he feels healthy enough to play football the way he knows how.

While all signs point to Purdy returning to the field on Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars visit the Bay Area, missing one more week is not completely off the table. At least not yet.
