While some may struggle to understand Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin and his famous Tomlinisms, his recent shot at Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson was heard loud and clear.

Earlier in the week, Tomlin addressed Minnesota Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy missing Week 4’s matchup against the Steelers — comparing the situation to Pittsburgh’s matchup against the Colts in 2024. Tomlin claimed that he didn’t mind facing Richardson as the starter — even begging his players to keep him healthy so Pittsburgh would continue to have an advantage.

“We were in a similar situation a year ago; we were playing in Indianapolis,” Tomlin told reporters. “Man, and I commented to the guys, ‘Keep [Anthony] Richardson upright. Don’t put [Joe] Flacco in the game.’ And you know, Flacco ended up in the game.”

Tomlin was correct in his assessment of Richardson, as the Colts benched the young quarterback in favor of Flacco just a few games later, after Richardson left the field voluntarily for one play, claiming he “was tired.”

The difference between veteran and rookie mindsets clearly isn’t lost on Tomlin — who respects Flacco’s ability to help his team win games. Richardson? Maybe not so much.
