Ndamukong Suh was once considered the NFL’s dirtiest player. The five-time All-Pro defensive tackle knows what it’s like to make mistakes and have to learn from them.
So that made Suh — a supremely talented player in his day and a former Eagle, at that — the perfect person to discuss what happened with Jalen Carter in Week 1.
Suh was on the “Green Light with Chris Long” podcast earlier this week when Long, the former Eagles defensive end, asked him about Carter’s spitting incident.
Carter was seemingly goaded by Dak Prescott when the Cowboys quarterback spat in Carter’s direction seconds into the Eagles’ opener. Carter then spat on Prescott, was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and promptly ejected.
“The first thing we see this year is him losing his cool,” Long said. “What would you tell a young player like Jalen Carter about trying to bottle that up?”
Suh offered his advice on how to respond — and how to get back at Prescott.
“My heart of hearts would have been like Jalen, take that one on the chin,” Suh said. “But two series later, three series later, you go ahead on a clean hit and put that elbow right in his ribs. And then get up off of him, push on his chest like, ‘Are you sure you want to start this smoke?’
“That’s how you’re being creative about it. But you’re also doing it within the white lines and within the rules. That’s where you’ve got to teach a young guy. You can’t react right away. And you really get them back where it truthfully hurts within the rules, within the white lines.”
Carter was apologetic to his teammates and Eagles fans after the 24-20 win over Dallas in Week 1. The 2024 All-Pro was fined heavily but not suspended further after the incident.
Carter has been a dominant force for the Eagles since they selected him No. 9 overall in the 2023 NFL draft. The former Georgia star fell later than his talent would suggest due to what some NFL teams deemed as character concerns.
Suh said Carter learning that lesson will come with “maturity.”
“He is so talented and so raw,” Suh added. “It’s just a matter of time.”
