Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix had three crucial overthrows in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers last week, but he hasn’t lost the support of his coaches or teammates, and Nix plans to keep slinging it.

“I’m going to miss several throws in the future and probably going to miss a few deep ones,” Nix said when asked about last week’s incompletions. “Just got to keep going.”

Broncos coach Sean Payton has reiterated that he does not want to overcoach Nix on the issue.

“You have to be careful,” Payton said. “When they’re just off the fingertips… You’re always looking at your technique within the pocket. One of them was a flea flicker, and we had seen in third-and-long when you ran a draw, there was a big collapse of the defense. Sure enough. I think that you keep firing.

“If it was something different, a lot of times maybe crossing routes to the left, if they’re not mechanically opening up their hips, you can be behind receivers. There are certain things, but the only thing I would say is like [Courtland] Sutton’s is a little bit of a double move. It was a seam-go. Guys sometimes aren’t at top speed like your mind sees them. Just keep firing. He is going to hit plenty of those.”

Payton has continued to back his quarterback, and that support is crucial for Nix.

“I love it,” Nix said of Payton allowing him to continue taking chances. “That’s the name of the game. You just keep making the next play. You keep throwing it. You don’t want to be afraid of failure, don’t want to be afraid of missing. You just go out there and shoot the shot, and we’ll hit them.”

Nix has room for improvement, but Payton will be careful not to take away what makes the QB difficult to defend.

“One of the things that is a gift is his off-schedule throws,” Payton said. “You just want to be careful how much you tell him. Then I think part of it is when you settle into certain plays, there’s a rhythm to the mechanics, whether it’s three-five or play action. Overall, I think it’s coming out well. The key is one of his great strengths is he doesn’t take a lot of sacks. He’s quick through a progression. I think you’ll start seeing that.”

Denver’s preparing to host the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football in Week 4. Nix will face a defense that has allowed the eighth-most passing yards in the NFL and the seventh-most points. Monday should provide a good opportunity for Nix to get back on track and he continues to pursue a perfect game.

“I feel like I’m always going to leave plays out there,” Nix said. “That’s why I’m going to keep stepping back up to the podium and have an answer for them. Ultimately, you want to go out there and hit every single one of them. I’ve yet to actually play a game where I have hit all of them, so I’m working on that. I feel confident that one day I can go out there and do it. That may be crazy on my part, but I truly believe it.”
