Following the New York Giants’ Week 3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, which dropped them to 0-3, head coach Brian Daboll decided to make a drastic change.

The Giants named rookie Jaxson Dart as the starting quarterback, replacing veteran and offseason addition Russell Wilson after two poor outings sandwiched around one good one.

Despite the move, rumors have swirled about Wilson’s future in New York. He signed only a one-year deal, and it wouldn’t be overly costly for the Giants to part ways with him and promote Jameis Winston to the backup job behind Dart.

However, on Saturday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported that the Giants currently have no intention of trading Wilson, even though several teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, who will be without Joe Burrow for the next three months, could use interim solutions under center.

More NFL: Giants’ Russell Wilson Receives Brutal Prediction After Losing Starting Job

Wilson hasn’t found his footing since leaving the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, where he spent 10 seasons, made nine Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl.

He then spent two years with the Denver Broncos under head coach Sean Payton — a stint that didn’t go as planned — followed by a one-year run with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, he’s been relegated to a second-string role, which he says he’s in support of.

“The best thing I can do is lead from the front,” Wilson said earlier this week. “I thank God every day that I get to do what I love and play this game with guys that I enjoy being around… it’s about the team and helping Jaxson.”

Through three games, Wilson has completed just 59.1% of his passes for 778 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, posting a 78.5 passer rating during that stretch.

Now with Dart stepping in, Daboll emphasized that this isn’t a short-term move and that New York is committed to its rookie QB for the foreseeable future.

“I met privately with both Russ yesterday and Jaxson, and Russ was nothing but a pro, which is what I would expect him to be,” Daboll told reporters. “It’s my decision. We’re going with Jaxson. We’re going to get him ready to play this week and for the remainder of the season. He’s going to do everything he can. Russ will be the backup.”
