Heated seats in a car are considered a luxury. Heated seats in the NFL? Not so much.
There are only 32 head coaching jobs available in the NFL and over eight billion people in the world to pick from. In other words, the chances of landing that job are slim. The chances of keeping that job with so many other qualified candidates make it nearly an impossible task.

At the one-month mark of the 2025 NFL regular season, plenty of fanbases are eager for change. It’s inevitable and the nature of a business where supply vastly outweighs the demand.
The Miami Dolphins‘ Mike McDaniel is feeling a little more than the Florida heat this season, while some mainstays on the sideline continue in their roles without worry.
Here’s a look at the temperature for every NFL coach through three weeks and an assessment of just how hot their seat might be.

Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) makes a catch for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field. The play was originally ruled an incomplete pass, but the call was overturned. Despite TeSlaa’s effort, the Packers won the game 27-13.

NFL coach hot seat rankingsCome on, they just sat down
Ben Johnson, Chicago Bears
Mike Vrabel, New England Patriots
Pete Carroll, Las Vegas Raiders
Aaron Glenn, New York Jets
Kellen Moore, New Orleans Saints
Liam Coen, Jacksonville Jaguars
Brian Schottenheimer, Dallas Cowboys

None of the seven new coaches this season should be in danger of losing their seat at the table. It hasn’t been a glamorous start for any of them, but you can’t pull the plug after one month. Well you can, but it wouldn’t be smart. Their grades are incomplete and all seven remain safe for now.
Fully reclined and comfortable
Dan Campbell, Detroit Lions
Matt LaFleur, Green Bay Packers
Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs
Jim Harbaugh, Los Angeles Chargers
Sean McVay, Los Angeles Rams
Kevin O’Connell, Minnesota Vikings
Nick Sirianni, Philadelphia Eagles
Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco 49ers
Mike Macdonald, Seattle Seahawks
A little more than a third of NFL coaches won’t have to worry about their job security – provided they stay out of trouble off the field. Steichen might be the most interesting entrant here, but a quick start from the Colts has cooled his seat entirely. Otherwise, there are no surprises in this tier.

Don’t get too comfortable
John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens
Sean McDermott, Buffalo Bills
Sean Payton, Denver Broncos
Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
Some of the longest-tenured coaches don’t appear to be in danger of being replaced, but that could change quickly if results don’t improve.
Harbaugh’s Ravens have been a disappointing club to this point and the defense is a mess. He’s been in the big chair in Baltimore since 2008, with only one Super Bowl win to show for it. At some point, a change might become necessary for one of the AFC frontrunners.

McDermott is in a similar boat for the Bills. He’s been the head coach since 2017, but continues to fall short in the playoffs despite possessing a roster with arguably the league’s best player at the most important position, Josh Allen. He’s one more early exit away from feeling the heat.
Payton and Tomlin each have teams that are supposed to be contenders, but look far from it in the early going. Previous results won’t save them if things continue to take a downward turn. Bowles tends to struggle with game management, but Baker Mayfield covers up those warts. Provided Tampa doesn’t fall apart, he should be safe.
Turning up the heat
Raheem Morris, Atlanta Falcons
Zac Taylor, Cincinnati Bengals
DeMeco Ryans, Houston Texans

Each of these teams are struggling mightily this season. Gannon’s Cardinals were supposed to take a step forward, but their 2-1 record is misleading, much like Taylor’s Bengals. The Cincinnati coach seems to have a Marvin Lewis-level of job security, but another injury to Joe Burrow might save him.
Morris and Ryans each have teams with struggling offenses and young quarterbacks that haven’t taken the next step. Without a step in the right direction, they could easily be on the outs for an offensive-minded coach.
Caution: Hot
Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland Browns
Advertisement
The Panthers have shown no improvement throughout the Canales years and Stefanski is a victim of his situation. The Cleveland coach was dealt a bad hand after the Deshaun Watson trade failed and that will likely lead to his dismissal – even though he handled the offseason admirably. As for Daboll, he is here because of Jaxson Dart. If that move blows up in his face, he’s on the fast track to the standing room only section.

Standing room only
Mike McDaniel, Miami Dolphins
Like any game of musical chairs, someone will eventually be left without a seat at the table. McDaniel’s Dolphins have taken a significant step back after a brief run of success, which rarely bodes well for job security in the NFL. As for the other member of this tier, Callahan is tasked with making sure Cam Ward reaches his potential. The Titans haven’t looked like an NFL team at times this season and that’s tough for the coach to overcome.

Both coaches appear to be on thin ice. That doesn’t mean they can’t survive it, but things would have to change for the better – and fast.
