The 49ers were far from full strength on Sunday, but former cornerback Richard Sherman doesn’t want to hear any excuses.

San Francisco lost 26-21 in its Week 4 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Sherman took to his podcast to address the poor play.

“That was awful,” Sherman proclaimed on “The Richard Sherman Podcast.” “Brock Purdy is back. I think if Mac Jones wasn’t hurt as badly as he was, he starts this game. You could see the rust. Obviously, Brock completed some really good passes, but you could see the rust.”

Mac Jones stepped in and was more than serviceable in his two starts while Purdy was sidelined with a toe injury. Now, questions are circulating whether or not Purdy returned prematurely. The former seventh-round pick had a passer rating of 52.1 on Sunday against Jacksonville.

“There weren’t many holes for Christian McCaffrey to work his way through,” Sherman continued. “Way, way, way, too many drops.”

McCaffrey has been the most consistent skill player for the 49ers so far this season. The Stanford alum currently has 530 yards from scrimmage, and he needs his teammates to answer the call and produce.

“They still had a chance to win because they’re a really good team and Jacksonville isn’t a great team, Sherman concluded. “To turn the ball over four times in any game is unacceptable.”

The 49ers looked far from perfect, but they still are 3-1, though that didn’t stop some seemingly harsh judgments from Sherman commenting on his former team.
