The 49ers made several mistakes in their 26-21 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, and their PFF grades highlight what they’ll need to clean up before “Thursday Night Football” against the Rams in Los Angeles on a short week’s rest.

Starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who has been limited in practice for the past two weeks with a toe injury, was under pressure on 39 percent of his drop backs, and that was how the Jaguars’ defense affected the game.

Purdy completed just six of his 14 attempts for 100 yards with one interception and a 37.8 passer rating when under pressure. While he generally been very accurate on intermediate throws 10 to 19 yards downfield, Purdy only completed four of his nine passes at that depth with two interceptions and a 33.8 passer rating.

Many of the 49ers’ wide receivers have had limited time on the field during practice, including Jauan Jennings, who has been dealing with multiple injuries since the start of training camp. Kendrick Bourne signed with the 49ers after Purdy suffered his toe injury, thus giving him limited reps with the signal-caller.

Bourne and Jennings each were targeted four times — Jennings completed two and Bourne only brought in one, with three graded as drops by PFF.

Ricky Pearsall had two contested catches in the loss and is tied with Los Angeles Rams receiver Puka Nacua for the NFL lead with eight on the 2025 season.

The offensive line had a tough task protecting Purdy, who often was on the run in the backfield. The offense as a whole allowed 16 total pressures in the loss.

Quarterback pressures allowed:

LT Trent Williams — one hit, three hurries

LG Connor Colby — five hurries

C Jake Brendel — one hurry

RG Dominick Puni — two hurries

RT Colton McKivitz — two hurries

RB Christian McCaffrey — one hit

TE Jake Tonges — one hurry

It is clear that without George Kittle on the field, the 49ers are having a difficult time getting the run game going. McCaffrey managed just 49 yards on 17 carries, with 48 of those yards coming after contact. The All-Pro running back only gained 0.06 yards before contact, frequently getting hit immediately when the ball touched his hands.

The 49ers have been unable to average four-plus yards per carry in any game this season.

On the other side of the ball, the 49ers’ defense only was able to pressure Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence on 15.2 percent of his drop backs. The group only managed five total pressures in the game:

Bryce Huff — two hurries

Yetur Gross-Matos — one hurry

Sam Okuayinonu — one hurry

Mykel Williams — one hurry

The 49ers also committed seven missed tackles:

Upton Stout — 2

Marques Sigle — 1

Darrell Luter — 1

Sam Okuayinonu — 1

Jason Pinnock — 1

Fred Warner — 1

Warner was the highlight of the 49ers’ defense, receiving a 90.9 overall grade. The All-Pro registered seven total tackles, a forced fumble and allowed three catches on four targets for only 20 yards. The only way his day might have been better is if he had recovered the fumble he forced, or caught the near interceptions that hit his hands.

Warner’s 93.4 grade through four weeks is the highest PFF grade in the league on either side of the ball.
