The Miami Dolphins cut ties with 2023 second-round pick Cam Smith on Tuesday, waiving him from their non-football illness list, the team announced.

Smith, 22, was the team’s top draft selection in the 2023 NFL draft after the Dolphins’ first-round pick was forfeited as part of an NFL tampering penalty. Miami also acquired another 2023 first-rounder, but later traded it away as part of the trade that landed the team pass rusher Bradley Chubb.

In his rookie season, Smith hardly saw the field on defense, finishing the year with only 20 snaps and the majority of his time spent on special teams. A year later, Smith saw more action but had two stints on the injured reserve.

With little competition at the cornerback position heading into training camp this year, Smith again struggled to stay on the field but made a decent impression in his limited time in preseason.

But room for Smith became scarce after the Dolphins added veterans Jack Jones and Rasul Douglas, who are currently serving as the team’s starting duo.

Smith’s time with the Dolphins ends after he appeared in only 21 games and played just 153 total defensive snaps. He was credited with recording 18 tackles.
