ORONO, Maine (WABI) – The Seattle Seahawks are celebrating their 50th season in the NFL this fall, and the origin of their logo resides on the UMaine campus.
The carved cedar transformation mask created by the Kwakwaka’wakw people of British Columbia was given to the Hudson Museum at the Collins Center for the Arts by UMaine graduate and philanthropist William Palmer.
It’s part of thousands of pieces of a Native American artifact collection that Palmer donated to the university.
“I think for a museum to have a piece that reaches the public in the way that it does, and has such a connection to an NFL team, is unusual,” said Gretchen Faulkner, Hudson Museum director.
The museum is open weekdays from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and admission is free.
