Week 5 of the college football started with an early upset Friday night. Top-10 ranked Florida State went into Charlottesville undefeated but left with their first loss at the hands of the Cavaliers. I’m sure that result makes a contingent of Hogs Haven happy. That wouldn’t be the only upset of the weekend. LSU has started slow offensively despite having a top quarterback prospect in Garrett Nussmeier. It finally caught up to them this weekend against Ole Miss, and the Tigers lost their first game of the season. Alabama took it on the chin against Florida State, but have rounded into form. They took an early lead on the road against Georgia and would not relinquish it. The matchup of the weekend, Oregon going to Penn State, needed overtime to be settled. An interception by the Ducks allowed them to take down he 3rd-ranked Nittany Lions.
The marquee matchup of Week 6 might be Florida State trying to rebound at home against Miami, but I’m looking forward to another game a little more. Last year, Vanderbilt knocked off Alabama when they were ranked #1. The Commodores will visit Tuscaloosa and look to stay undefeated by beating the Crimson Tide for the second year in a row. The top team in the country so far, Ohio State, will be in action against Minnesota. Mississippi State gave Tennessee all it could handle in Week 5, but came up a little short. Will they be able to upset top-ten ranked Texas A&M?
Below are a few players who had a good week and might be able to help out the Commanders. Let me know what you think about these prospects and feel free to post players that stood out to you.
Sawyer Robertson | QB | RS Senior | Baylor
A quarterback from Baylor? Hear me out. Sawyer Robertson has been playing lights out this season. Who leads college football in passing yards and touchdowns? Robertson. Through five games, he has over 1,700 yards and 17 TDs. How has he been doing it? Robertson is a pocket passer who uses all his tools to get the better of coverage. He manipulates defenders by looking them off, then quickly identifying his target and getting the ball out fast. He has no problem working the middle of the field or taking shots deep on the boundary. One thing he could do is tighten up his throwing motion; he has a slight windup on his throws that can allow defenders to get a jump on his passes. Robertson lead Baylor over Oklahoma State with four touchdowns and 393 yards on 24 of 35 passing. He also tacked on a rushing TD.
J’Mari Taylor | RB | Senior | Virginia
It wasn’t easy, but Virginia pulled out a huge upset victory over Florida State. The same could be said for J’Mari Taylor’s running against the Seminoles. He didn’t rip off huge runs, but he ran hard and softened the defense using his stocky 5’9”, 204 lb frame. Taylor proved tough to bring down at times, bouncing off tackles and making the most of what daylight he could find. If Chris Rodriguez isn’t retained beyond this season, Taylor could play a similar role for the Commanders. On 21 rush attempts, he had 99 yards and a touchdown.
Emmanuel Henderson, Jr. | WR | Senior | Kansas
I know the Commanders just drafted Jaylin Lane for his speed, but is anything wrong with having more speed at receiver? That’s what Emmanuel Henderson, Jr. brings to a team and it was showcased against Cincinnati. The 6’1”, 190 lb Alabama transfer put together a prolific performance against the Bearcats. With just five catches, he had 213 yards and two touchdowns. The Bearcats gave Henderson, Jr. free releases multiple times and he simply outran the defense. Much of his damage was done with go routes and slants, so I’d like to see more of the route tree from Henderson, Jr. Demonstrating he can consistently get open against press man coverage would also boost his draft stock. He also offers special teams value as a kick returner, already returning one to the house this season.
Tanner Koziol | TE | Senior | Houston
The Commanders need to find a pass-catcher to eventually replace Zach Ertz. Luckily, that’s all Tanner Koziol does. At Ball State last year, he had 94 receptions. Already this season, he appears to be a favorite of Houston QB Conner Weigman. His size at 6’7”, 250 lbs makes him an easy target with a big catch radius. He’s not an exceptional athlete, but he runs good routes and has strong, reliable hands. His height can make it difficult for him to gain leverage as a blocker, but he is willing and can hold the point of attack. Koziel had six catches for 86 yards and a touchdown in the Cougars comeback win over Oregon State.
Parker Brailsford | C | RS Junior | Alabama
When Kalen DeBoer left Washington for the head coaching job at Alabama, he brought Parker Brailsford with him. Brailsford is a team captain who has been one of the Crimson Tide’s best players along the offensive line. He’s had at least two games so far this year where he hasn’t given up a sack, and one where he hasn’t given up a pressure. All this while only being 6’2”, 290 lbs. That size allows Brailsford to snap and quickly get out of his stance and into defenders. He’s very good on the move as a puller and works well in space. If he can be drafted in the middle of the draft, he could be an understudy for Tyler Biadasz. Sitting behind him could allow Brailsford to put on size if desired by the team, but there have been successful centers whose size is less than desired. Brailsford could be one of those players.
Just for fun, check out the screen pass to Alabama’s 6’7”, 369 lbs left tackle Kadyn Proctor, a player many expect to be drafted early in the first round.
Caden Curry | DE | Senior | Ohio State
The pass rush we saw from the Commanders against the Raiders didn’t show up in Atlanta. The team needs more along the edge and Caden Curry might be able to help. Ohio State is the top-ranked team in the country and Curry, along with the rest of their defense, has a lot to do with it. Relentless is probably the best way to describe his play. Off the edge, he doesn’t have amazing speed or bend, but he has quick hands and is strong. Curry is a mismatch when lined up over interior linemen, so he offers versatility. The 6’3”, 260 lb Buckeye put up 11 tackles, five for a loss, and three sacks.
Isaiah Glasker | LB | RS Junior | BYU
While I think the linebacker play, especially from Frankie Luvu, wasn’t terrible, it was clear that the Falcons targeted them in the passing game. Isaiah Glasker has shown he can be a versatile player in the middle of a defense. Not only can he play as an off-ball linebacker and drop into coverage, but he’s got great burst off the edge as a rusher. It’s rare to see him miss a tackle because he has great length and size at 6’5”, 240 lbs. One thing about Glasker, other than he wears a fantastic neck roll, is he’ll be 23 in October thanks to completing a mission while at BYU. He sealed the win against Colorado with an interception while having four tackles and a sack.
Hezekiah Masses | CB | Senior | California
Quietly, Cal has been putting defensive backs into the league. Hezekiah Masses looks to be next in line. The 6’1”, 185 lb transfer from Florida International is tied for the most interceptions in college football with four, and has the second-most PBUs with seven. He looks impressive in man coverage because of his patience and fluidity that allows him to stay in phase with receivers throughout their routes. All those PBUs come by way of his long arms that he uses to play through the back of receivers without interfering. Cal doesn’t look to play a lot of zone, but Masses has the understanding of concepts and good instincts. He had six tackles and an interception in a comeback win over Boston College.
Jakari Foster | Safety | RS Senior | Louisiana Tech
Another one of the leaders in interceptions in college football is Jakari Foster. He’s taken the ball away three times this season, two of them while tracking deep balls downfield. He may not have the speed to play single-high, his range looks good and he uses his cues to get to the ball quickly. Foster’s size at 6’0”, 211 lbs, is sufficient for an NFL safety. I’d like to see more of him in run support to make sure he’s more of a complete safety. The Bulldogs beat UTEP with Foster contributing five tackles, a PBU, and a pick six.
