Ravens Spotlight: Who is backup quarterback Cooper Rush?
The Ravens head into their second preseason game 1-0 after defeating the Colts last week in *** game that saw them only complete 5 passes for only 59 yards. They somehow still managed to win thanks to *** strong running game and defense, but they need to see more from the passing game this preseason. That means backup quarterback Cooper Rush has to step up his play. The new addition to the Ravens will have his chase this weekend against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys. The 7-year veteran is coming off his most productive season as he started 8 games, going 4-4 for Dallas. Head coach John Harbaugh has been pleased with Rush so far in training camp and likes what he brings to the team as *** backup quarterback. Cooper Rush, I mean, he’s *** professional, he’s *** pro, uh, operates the offense well, makes great decisions, handles the protections, gets the ball out on time, accurate passer, uh, I think he’s, I think he’s *** winning quarterback, you know, and, uh, you see that every day in practice and. I mean, you know, it’s it’s pretty hard to stack quarterbacks up next to Lamar Jackson, you know, and, and, uh, but we do that we can, we always make those comparisons, but the important thing for Cooper is to be Cooper, you know, and do the things that he does, he does so well and, uh, and win games for you playing that way and he he’s done *** really, I think he’s had *** really good camp. So. It is unlikely that Lamar Jackson plays this preseason, so Rushs should have *** good chance to show what he can do. He should also be motivated to play against his former team. They play at 7 p.m. on Saturday in Dallas.
One offseason move that went under the radar was the signing of quarterback Cooper Rush, but now with Lamar Jackson’s health in question, the move is seen differently. The backup quarterback has never been a priority for the organization, but this year they signed Rush to a 2-year $6 million deal. It was a considerable deal for a team with limited cap space, but they wanted an upgrade at the backup quarterback position. The 31-year-old quarterback is an eight-year veteran who has started 14 games while he was with the Dallas Cowboys. He has starting experience as recently as last season when he went 4-4 filling in for the injured Dak Prescott in eight games. He had a career-high 12 touchdowns to only five interceptions in 2024.The Ravens’ offense will have to adjust to Rush’s game as he is a traditional pocket passer and has limited mobility. They will have to rely on a more traditional running game and may lean on running back Derrick Henry to carry the load while Jackson recovers.
