BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – There was no shortage of excitement in Lane Stadium after Metallica rocked so hard, “Enter Sandman” spiked levels on the Richter Scale.
If you’re wondering where the band got all that energy, it came right from one of our hometown farms.
The usual customers at Glade Road Growing include people from the Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford surrounding areas. But now, the Walker family can say they’ve served rock stars.
Heavy metal isn’t something you’ll usually hear at a local farm stand. It wasn’t a music of choice until recently for the Walker family.
“We’ve been listening to a lot of Metallica this week, that’s for sure,” said Sally Walker, owner of Glade Road Growing.
Walker said it all started when she got a call she never could have expected. A representative with Metallica was shopping for ingredients for the band’s meals while they were in Blacksburg, hoping for only the best while the band made it’s first-ever stop at Virginia Tech.
“I was just thrilled and I also wanted to be up front, and I was like it’s still early in the season and we have these kinds of vegetables, we also have these kinds of meats and we’d love to serve you if it works out,” recalled Walker. “They showed up and that’s when we were just, like, thrilled to have them here.”
Metallica’s personal chef picked the finest from Walker’s humble farm, creating a menu using Glade Road Growing’s very own poultry, produce and more.
It’s an experience Walker said she couldn’t have imagined. It was even more special knowing the band values the same local-sourced and healthy eating lifestyle she promotes through her own meals.
“It was nice to have, you know, Metallica kind of being behind that message with their personal chef… It’s something that they really feel strongly about so that was really exciting,” she said.
The once-in-a-lifetime crossover with Metallica didn’t end there. The band couldn’t get enough of the food and the chef came back for more, this time bringing the Walker family a signed photo and a few guitar picks from the concert.
“They chose to come back, like make the extra effort to come back here and get like spare ribs and and more duck and more chicken to take with them to the next spot. So, you know, we’re just. Really tickled”
