The San Francisco 49ers used their second pick of the seventh round on an offensive lineman. Iowa’s Connor Colby was the pick. Colby, a 4-year senior, is 309 pounds with a wingspan and arm length in the sixth and seventh percentiles. The good news is his jumps suggest there is some serious lower body explosion/power, being in the 84th percentile in the broad jump. Colby also ran a 5.11 40-yard dash, good enough for the 79th percentile.

He was a right guard for the previous two years but started at right tackle and left guard as a sophomore back in 2022. Colby was a 4-year starter at Iowa, where he played multiple positions. As you’d expect from an Iowa offensive lineman, strength isn’t an issue. You’re not going to find many plays of Colby moving backward.

Iowa is a predominant zone running team. When they ran behind Colby, the Hawkeyes averaged 4.1 yards per carry during his career.

Colby could be the swing tackle, guard, or lineman with his positional versatility. It’s likely the Niners will give him plenty of opportunity to play multiple positions, based on the current construction of the roster.
