Has TexasArch Manning been a top 40 quarterback in the Power 4 college football conferences this year?

The answer is no if you consult a new ranking by ESPN writer Bill Connelly. The list, in which Connelly ranked the signal callers for all 68 Power 4 conferences, has Texas’ sophomore QB at No. 41 on the list.

“Texas’ defense will buy [Manning] development time, and things could click at any moment, but they haven’t yet,” Connelly wrote.

Meanwhile, the highest ranked area quarterback plays north of the Red River for the Oklahoma Sooners. Washington State transfer John Mateer, who was getting some Heisman buzz before a hand injury, comes in at No. 12 in the rankings. The man he replaced at OU, Denton Guyer product Jackson Arnold, is at No. 43 for his play with the Auburn Tigers.

Another notable SEC quarterback is Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed who slots in at No. 26 after leading the Aggies to a 4-0 start and the No. 6 ranking in the country. His former teammate Conner Weigman lands exactly 20 spots behind him with his new team, the Houston Cougars, off to an undefeated 4-0 start.

A group of passers from Big 12 area schools landed together in the 20-30 range with Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson leading the pack at No. 21. Just behind him are TCU’s Josh Hoover (No. 23) and Texas Tech’s Behren Morton (No. 28). Oklahoma State QB Zane Flores finds his spot much further down the list at No. 65.

SMU’s Kevin Jennings is ranked at No. 35 with Connelly writing that the junior “is still making too many mistakes to account for a sketchy defense.”

Jennings still ranks well above of the man he replaced for the Mustangs last season, with Preston Stone (a Parish Episcopal grad now at Northwestern) coming in at No. 67 and second-to-last on the list. Another ACC passer worth mentioning is Virginia’s Chandler Morris who ranks 13th after spending time with Oklahoma and TCU before a standout season for UNT last year.
