Sitting at 1-3, the Houston Texans are in no place to give up massive draft compensation to compete for a Super Bowl. Should they win three of their next four games and return to a winning record, then conversations could start.

Rumors are swirling that the New Orleans Saints could begin a fire sale after a 0-4 start to the regular season. With Chris Olave remaining a premier wideout and potential suitor on the market for teams looking to elevate their WR No. 2 spot en route to a postseason push.

So, does Houston make sense given the ties to C.J. Stroud, Ohio State and a winnable division? Saints Wire thinks so, which is why they’ve listed the back-to-back AFC South champs as a prime spot for Olave to land through 2026 if both sides can come to an agreement on a proper package.

“Alternatively, look at the Houston Texans. They own two second-rounders (one via the Washington Commanders) as well as two fourth-round picks (another one from Washington) and could put together a competitive package,” Saint Wire’s John Sigler wrote. “Houston is several years away from extending star quarterback CJ Stroud, and reuniting the old Ohio State Buckeyes teammates has obvious appeal.”

Initially, Sigler projected the Saints to move Olave to Kansas City for a first-round pick. Given that the Texans are unlikely to win a Super Bowl with their current offensive line and limited success outside of Nico Collins at wide receiver, giving up that much is a risky move. But with an extra second-round pick, plus two extra Day 3 selections, there’s enough collateral to build a deal around Washington’s pick in the Laremy Tunsil deal plus maybe a later-round selection.

Olave, who would have another year on his contract from the fifth-year option, played one season with Stroud at Ohio State before heading off to the draft as a top 12 selection. While Garrett Wilson and Jaxon Smith-Njigba were more prominent targets in the short game, Olave thrived as a vertical threat, averaging 14.4 yards per catch while scoring a team-leading 13 touchdowns.

Injuries have derailed a promising start to Olave’s NFL tenure. After posting back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, the 6-foot target has only played in 12 games, totaling 58 catches for 585 yards and two touchdowns.

If general manager Nick Caserio were smart, he’d offer the New York Giants‘ third-round pick acquired in the move for Ole Miss quarterback Jackson Dart at pick No. 25 first. Should the Saints say no, then a conversation could be built around one of the two second-round picks with the conversation of an extension to be added toward the deal.

Maybe Houston could throw in a player to sweeten the deal, but giving up anything other than a third could be too steep for now, especially given the status of the franchise moving into October. Trade talks of landing talent should cease until the Texans are over .500 and making noise in the AFC. That won’t happen until at least Tuesday morning following a Monday Night Football victory over the Seattle Seahawks.
