The New York Giants suddenly have a very crowded quarterback room after an offseason flurry of activity by general manager Joe Schoen.

The Giants started the offseason with no quarterbacks under contract, but after Schoen brought back hometown hero Tommy DeVito and signed veteran free agents Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, the room was quickly filled up and enhanced.

Then two weeks ago, the club traded up in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to get Ole Miss star Jaxson Dart adding even more talent and, along with it, intrigue.

Questions arose about what the plan would be with all of these quarterbacks in-house. Head coach Brian Daboll wasted no time naming Wilson the starter and Winston the primary backup. Dart would be developed and brought along at a leisurely pace. DeVito? The plan is unclear, but the Giants want him here as he knows the offense the best.

Last season, the Giants started three different players at quarterback — Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, and Devito with a fourth one, Tim Boyle, playing one game in relief. Injuries ravaged the room and Schoen does not want a repeat, hence the extra attention to the position this offseason.

But four could be too many. One might have to go. Winston never made much sense for the Giants, especially on a two-year deal while Wilson got just one year. Now comes the possibility of a trade since Dart is in the house and looking very much like a player who could fast-track that slow-walking plan the Giants have for him.

On Saturday, the news out of New Orleans was that quarterback Derek Carr is retiring. The Saints are a former team of Winston’s and their quarterback depth chart currently has rookie Tyler Shough on top with Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener backing him up.

They could be seeking a more experienced hand such as Winston and the Giants might be open to a deal.

Winston played in New Orleans from 2020-2023, starting 10 games over four seasons. He played in Cleveland last season and inked a two-year, $8 million deal with Big Blue this March.

This is pure speculation, mind you, but Winston does not really figure into the Giants’ plans. A trade might just benefit all parties here.
