What a difference a year makes.
After having an uninspiring ground game in 2024, the Denver Broncos brought in two key additions this spring — rookie RJ Harvey during the NFL draft and veteran J.K. Dobbins during free agency. Through four weeks, the Broncos are now averaging 143.3 rushing yards per game, the fifth-best average in the league.
“They’re an incredible duo,” star guard Quinn Meinerz said of Dobbins and Harvey. “Working with those two guys — we have a lot more meetings this year together. We’ve kind of alluded since training camp that we’re really working to nail down this run game so that we can be successful. And you can see that hard work is really starting to pay off as we’re continuing to get more and more yards on those plays… We have the vet and the rook. So you know they’re doing a really good job. J.K. has been an incredible leader for RJ, and so we have a great duo in the backfield.”
Dobbins and Harvey have combined to total 548 yards from scrimmage and score four touchdowns so far.
“It is a great balance,” Dobbins said of the team’s backfield rotation. “I’m always in RJ’s corner. I’m always trying to help him and do everything I can to make him be a really good pro. He’s going to keep getting better, and we’re going to help each other in the long run. That’s the only thing that matters, is us getting the win and me helping my young guy.”
Denver’s offense rushed for 186 yards in a 28-3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4 with Dobbins leading the way with 101 yards on the ground. As a duo, Dobbins and Harvey combined to total 203 yards from scrimmage.
“I was very excited to see those guys go. … At the end of the day, it’s imposing your will, that’s what running the ball does,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said. “It’s you saying that we have the desire to run the ball, you got to stop us. And that is what we did today, and it was a lot of fun to be a part of. It was really good to see those guys get going and them combined at that number is really cool to see.”
This week, the Broncos will face a Philadelphia Eagles defense that’s allowing 126 rushing yards per game. If Denver’s going to get an upset win against the defending Super Bowl champions, Dobbins and Harvey will be key.
