For a while Thursday night, it appeared John Curtis Christian would post a another victory without any trouble to remain unbeaten.
Then came Warren Easton and a true scare.
The Patriots withstood a furious rally by the Eagles, scoring late to post a 33-29 victory at Tad Gormley Stadium in a District 9-5A game.
“We knew it was going to be like this because they have so many skilled players,” Patriots coach J.T. Curtis said. “They gave us problems. They have great physical size. The quarterback and running backs are as good as anyone we’ve played against. They fumbled five times against St. Aug. That did not happen tonight.”
The Patriots again leaned on a punishing run game to get the job done, amassing 413 yards on 39 carries. Jacobi Boudreaux led the way with 17 times for 177 yards and a touchdown while Gavin Ledet had six carries for 104 yards and a score. Isaac Hrabovsky had a 24-yard touchdown and added a catch for 19 yards.
Quarterback Carl Reed Jr. ran for two touchdowns and passed for one score for the Eagles.
The Patriots took control early, taking a 14-0 first quarter lead.
Boudreaux scored on a 7-yard run to make it 7-0 with 8:49 to play in the first quarter before Padgett broke free on an 88-yard touchdown run to make it 13-0 after a failed extra point with 1:35 to play in the opening quarter.
The Eagles responded with a 35-yard touchdown run by Reed to cut the deficit to 13-7 by the end of the quarter.
The Patriots took a 20-7 lead by halftime as Padgett scored on a 1-yard run midway through the second quarter.
Warren Easton stormed back to take the lead.
A 26-yard touchdown pass from Reed to Davon Edwards made it 20-14 with 4:56 to play in the quarter before Terrell Surtain scored on a 2-yard run on the final play of the quarter and the extra point gave Easton a 21-20 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
The Patriots responded quickly to recapture the lead in the first minute of the final quarter as Ledet scored on an 84-yard run and it was 26-21 after a failed 2-point conversion attempt.
Warren Easton fought back to take the lead on a 7-yard run by Reed and Myron Wilhike ran in the 2-point conversion to give the Eagles a 29-26 lead with 4:22 remaining.
Hrabovsky scored what turned out to be the game-winner on his 24-yard run with 4:57 remaining.
Warren Easton had a shot late but Jamari Horton came up with a big sack to get a stop and seal a hard-earned victory.
Bryce Carter had an interception for the Eagles.
“To come out with a win, especially in the fourth quarter speaks to remaining focused and calm,” Curtis said. “Getting a drive late to put us ahead showed toughness and competitive spirit. It was a typical Catholic League game. That’s the way it is in this league every week.”
Jeffrey Curtis led the Patriots defense with 11 tackles, including a sack while Jaden Keelan had seven tackles, including two sacks.
Padgett rushed 12 times for 93 yards and two touchdowns and was 3 of 5 for 41 yards and an interception.
“We fought hard,” Warren Easton coach Jerry Phillips said. “I was proud of the way we came back in the second half. They’ve been running this offense for 40 years. We played a good team tonight. We have to regroup, work hard and get back at it. We cannot dwell on this. We play next Thursday.”
Catholic League play continues for both teams next week.
The Eagles (3-2, 0-2) will host Archbishop Rummel next Thursday at Tad Gormley in a game you can listen to on 106.7 The Ticket.
The Patriots (4-0, 2-0) will take on Holy Cross next Friday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
“It’s a good thing to be undefeated,” Curtis said. “We have to continue to press to press the issue and get better weekly. The competition will only get tougher. We just have to clean up mistakes. We’re glad to be 4-0. I’m glad we have the extra day before our next game.”
