FITCHBURG — Behind a vicious sweep to the right that host St. Bernard’s had difficulty in slowing down, plus four Bernardian turnovers including three treacherous fumbles to complicate matters, visiting Blackstone Millville Regional came away with a come-from-behind, 33-20 win at the venerable Bernardian Bowl Friday night.
The loss drops St. Bernard’s to 2-2 in this 2025 season, with a trip to the city line and a visit to intercity rival Monty Tech on tap for next Friday night.
BMR, which knocked off the Bulldogs a week ago by a 14-12 edge, improved to 2-2.
The Chargers, which only dressed 22 young men on this mild evening at the foot of Tar Hill, used grit and tenacity to hold the Bernardians. They also went to the right with authority, ripping off high-yardage runs, including runs of 53, 36, 14, 21, and 14, to great effect. The last one ended up a Karson Cournoyer TD run to put the guests ahead for good, 21-14, with 35 ticks left in the third canto.
After St. Bernard’s had a key fourth-down conversion, the Bernardians fumbled the ball away at the Charger 36. Twelve plays later, BMR made it 27-14 on Nathan Kaczor’s 5-yard TD run off the right end.
St. B’s pulled back to within a touchdown as sophomore slinger Caleb LaFreniere (8 of 16, 135 yards passing) found Keegan Sklarz on a 51-yard bomb, but Kaczor extended the lead to the final score with a 77-yard TD run after the onside kick and a couple of penalties to the Chargers.
The Blue and Gold struck first, putting together a strong, 11-play, 68-yard excursion to open the scoring.
Backed by LaFreniere’s arm, the running of Jeremiah Williams, and a pair of key third-down conversions, the Bernies moved swiftly downfield. A 21-yard pass from LaFreniere to Nathan Kavanaugh set the hosts up in the BMR red zone, before LaFreniere play-faked and scooted right into the end zone from seven yards away.
Anthony Williams’ conversion run gave the Harvard Streeters an 8-0 lead with 6:48 remaining in the opening canto.
On the next series, the Chargers’ Kaczor’s 53-yard sweep set the tone, but the Bernies’ D stiffened and yielded only a 24-yard field goal by Nate Oliveira to get the tourists from near Rhode Island onto the scoreboard.
Oliver had another 24-yard field goal be true early in the second quarter, converting a pick of LaFreniere into points.
And while St. Bernard’s tried to increase the lead on the next series, the Bernardian offense faltered at the 1, letting a 34-yard LaFreniere carry and an 11-yard LaFreniere-to-Jeremiah completion go to waste.
St. B’s, though, converted a blocked punt into good field position with just over three minutes remaining in the opening half, with Jeremiah’s 18-yard carry setting up LaFreniere’s 4-yard TD run that saw him dive over the defender and into the end zone.
The rush failed, but St. Bernard’s held a 14-6 lead at intermission.
